Profile

Rose Zhang was born in Shandong Province, China, in 1987. She graduated from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology in 2015 with a degree in Environmental Art Design and worked as a designer in Beijing. Throughout her career and daily life, she developed a deep fascination with human emotions and everyday moments, which she captured in her sketches. An avid traveler, she also found inspiration in diverse cultures and scenic landscapes, gradually experimenting with various artistic mediums in her spare time. Her preferred forms of expression include charcoal sketches and oil or acrylic paintings, chinese ink painting, Japanese painting, etc., covering a wide range..

In 2019, she moved to Tokyo, Japan, balancing her professional work with artistic pursuits. There, she began participating in local art exhibitions and later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Kyoto University of the Arts.

In 2026, she relocated to France to continue her journey as an artist.

The Art of Human Connection Across Cultures

Travel has always been my greatest teacher. As an artist, I find endless inspiration in the subtle variations of human expression across different cultures. From the lively markets of Marrakech to the serene temples of Kyoto, each place tells its own story through the faces, gestures, and emotions of its people. These observations have become the foundation of my artistic practice, where I seek to capture the universal yet diverse language of human connection.

What fascinates me most is how culture shapes emotion. In Mediterranean countries, laughter is loud and gestures are expansive—conversations unfold like performances, full of dramatic pauses and sweeping motions. In contrast, East Asian cultures often communicate through quiet nuances: a slight tilt of the head, a barely-there smile, or the careful avoidance of direct eye contact. These differences are not just cultural traits but windows into deeper values—collectivism, restraint, or the celebration of individuality.

My sketchbook is filled with these fleeting moments. A charcoal study might capture the calloused hands of a Japanese craftsman, bent over his work with meticulous focus, while an oil painting immortalizes the animated debate between two elderly men in a Parisian café. The materials I choose reflect the emotions I wish to convey—bold, rough charcoal strokes for raw, unfiltered humanity; the layered richness of oils for complex, nostalgic scenes.

Landscapes and urban environments also play a crucial role. The chaotic energy of an Indian street festival demands bright, swirling compositions, while the misty solitude of a Scottish Highlands shepherd calls for muted tones and soft edges. The setting is never just a backdrop—it’s an active participant in the emotional narrative.

Through my work, I hope to show that while our expressions may differ, the feelings behind them—joy, sorrow, determination—are profoundly familiar. Art becomes a bridge, inviting viewers to recognize themselves in strangers from distant places. As I continue my journey, I’m reminded that to draw the world is to fall in love with it, one fleeting expression at a time.
